It’s that time of year again. The time when people throughout the country celebrate our moms and everything they do. Whether it’s packing lunches, being a shoulder to cry on when times are tough, or just loving you unconditionally, moms do a lot for their families. (Not to discount dads, but this weekend is Mother’s Day, after all.)
Moms are always there for us when we need them. A moms are also some of the strongest proponents for the environment.
I’m not a parent myself yet, but I’ve spoken with my own mom about this. She has said that once you become a parent, it becomes difficult not to look toward the future. What type of life, and world, will your child have when they grow up? It’s something that’s always at the back of your mind, and it influences all the decisions you make.
Perhaps Mothers Out Front says it best:
We will do anything to protect our children. We support their healthy lives today and build a strong foundation for their future. We are the primary purchasers for our households. We vote in large numbers. We can play a central role in creating a safe world for our children.
Mothers Out Front is a grassroots organization located in several states on the east coast. They’re actively working to transition from dirty fossil fuels to clean, sustainable energy. They work at the city and state level to elect environmentally minded officials and enact strong environmental policies.
They aren’t the only group pushing for these changes. Moms Clean Air Force is a national organization of over 725,000 moms (and dads) that, as the name suggests, are working for clean air for their children. They’re pushing for stronger clean air regulations to fight back against dirty polluters.
How any mom can make an impact
Joining one of these organizations is a great way to get involved. But what if you want to do more? Thanks to the internet, it’s easier than ever to make your voice heard.
Just take a look at Groovy Green Livin. The site’s creator, Lori Popkewitz Alper, previously worked as an attorney. Now she focuses on helping people live a healthy, sustainable lifestyle.
Another mom, Susannah Shmurak, created Healthy Green Savvy to share what she’s learned about avoiding toxic chemicals, eating healthy, and reducing your ecological impact. She says she’s “all about shortcuts to better health and greener living” that you can fit into your busy life.
You don’t need to quit your day job to tell your story. Sara Thorsland created her site, Green Minded Mama, after having her two children. She still teaches during the day, but she also shares her sustainable lifestyle tips with the world.
Actions you can take today — even if you’re not a mom
Whether or not you’re a mom, you can take action today to help yourself, your family, and future generations.
Solar power has been rapidly expanding, reaching over 1 million installations in the U.S. last year, and it may be a great option for you. Or you can switch to a clean power plan, if you can’t put solar on your roof. Choosing to eat locally produced food, and reducing the amount you throw away, are other great actions that anyone can take.
